Personality:
Jim Moriarty has no personality: at least, that's what he wants people to believe. He is a chameleon, changing his actions, accent, and appearance to fit whatever his schemes and situations require... but his mood is just as shifting and unpredictable, the other side of the coin to his immense intellect. Immovable and stoic one moment, staring down the barrel of a gun, as he quietly promises to "burn the heart" out of his nemesis at the next, he's shouting death threats into his phone and putting on a mocking falsetto. Is he as gay as his (frequent) flamboyant moments suggest? Who knows? He doesn't seem to confirm or care either way, and as far as he's concerned, it probably doesn't matter: sex is just another tool in his manipulation kit, a means to an end.

All of what he does is performative: Jim knows that in modern society, appearance and affectation are everything. It isn't the truth that matters, it's what you make people believe to be true. He manipulates facts and the people around him with equal aplomb to make the narrative fit what he needs on several occasions: posing as the actor Richard Brook to make Sherlock Holmes appear incompetent, hijacking television broadcasts to gaslight Scotland Yard, and making sure that Sherlock only saw him in person twice to discredit the detective's position as an expert witness. Moriarty is willing to go to any and all lengths to sell his stories, the supporting framework of his plans: he kills anyone who knows remotely anything of him or his operations (the Tong leader in "The Blind Banker", as well as attempting to use his terrorist connections to kill Irene Adler), and uses humans as pawns in the game of cat and mouse he starts with Sherlock in "The Great Game". He uses disguises and hiding in plain sight to great effect, changing his voice and accent to blend in with the public, waiting patiently until the perfect moment to make himself known.

All of this is partially rooted in a need for recognition and attention: Moriarty doesn't just want people to see how clever he is, he wishes to be revered for it, deferred to. He wants people to acknowledge that he is The Best and The Smartest, and will not countenance any opinions to the contrary: his first murder was in grade school: a bully named Karl Powers. "He laughed at me," he tells Sherlock via a hostage, "so I stopped him laughing." When he shows up at Sherlock's flat after his trial, Moriarty is not there to hurt him: only to make Sherlock explain how he sees the overarching scheme that's been built: "No, no, I know that you know it. I want you to PROVE you know it," he demands, praising Sherlock like a grade-school teacher with each correct point he makes. His ego is not confined to his intelligence, either: when Sherlock threatens to shoot him, he makes mention of his Westwood suit and insinuates that he knows better than to enter a situation that could kill him while he's dressed so well. When he breaks into the Tower of London, he makes sure that the heist looks as extravagant as possible, sitting in the throne wearing the Crown Jewels when Lestrade arrives to arrest him. To top it all off, when telling Sherlock how popular he is with his criminal network, he gloatingly refers to himself as "Mr. Sex": just more proof that it amuses him greatly to be held in high regard.

In the end, however, all the power he amassed and knowledge he held was not enough for Moriarty to overcome his mental illnesses ... which are not expressly named, but most likely anti-social personality disorder and depression (not sociopathy, thank you, Moffat). He willingly admits to Sherlock that he's insane ("You're just getting that now?"), and goes on to explain that his entire life has been a long exercise in boredom. He wanted a challenge to his intellect: he finds "ordinary humans" utterly dull, and is profoundly disappointed to discover that Sherlock is just as human in his emotional attachments to those around him. He had hoped for another genius to match wits with, a game worth playing endless rounds of, and saw one of them killing the other as the ultimate endgame, as it would be the only way he could truly be stopped.

Given the oppressive boredom he feels, and the acknowledgement that life is just a performance, Jim is an empty shell swinging back and forth between violent outbursts and flamboyant displays for attention, chasing fleeting moments of victory and agony. He conflates simple things into complex plans - paying people off to do things that make it look as though he has a fictitious cipher to open any lock - because to him, the ultimate truth is that everything is a disappointment. Nothing is ever as good as it seems. The fairy tales always need villains to make the heroes appear better than they are, and secrets are everything because the truth they obscure is boring and flat. He had hoped Sherlock was more, because it would mean there was something to live for. He kills himself at the end of "The Reichenbach Fall" not only to force Sherlock to jump off the roof to his apparent death, but because he is certain life has nothing more to offer him. Ryslig life will most likely become a renewed search for meaning, purpose, and validation, and I expect his journey to monsterhood will be unpredictable and deliciously terrifying. Where Childermass is an exercise in what happens when someone in Bavan actually has their shit together, Moriarty will be his opposite: completely irredeemable, with nothing left to prove or lose.
