CV: My Neighbor The Monster

My Neighbor The Monster is a children's show that premiered on the local access channel in July of (XX23). It is hosted by Richard Brook, a Simulacrum, who plays "himself" as living in a fictional apartment building in Bavan for new monsters, much like the 38-8. His neighbor is Sooterkin, a scruffy, bucktoothed monster puppet of no particular species with a British accent. Together, they have weekly discussions about what it's like becoming a monster, and why not every monster is someone humans should be afraid of. Some weeks there will be outings to kid-friendly monster-run businesses, on others Rich will have "visitors" to his apartment: other monsters who've volunteered to come on the air and talk a bit about their own experiences. Every episode ends with a bedtime story, as Sooterkin may be a monster, but he still has nightmares, and his new friend Rich used to be a storyteller, after all. ;)

There are recurring bits and segments, as well: Sooterkin's Scavenger Hunt invites viewers to help the puppet find something to add to his Shocking Shelf (think Blue's Clues) and the ever-present Mailbox. If the month's plot event affects the human population as well as monsters, the show immediately following will always be a discussion to help kids cope. You know, like that one episode of Sesame Street after Mr. Hooper died...

There are two other puppet characters: Irene the Arachne, who lives on the other side of Rich, and Mike the Gargoyle who lives on the roof of the building and hoards secrets. There are two other monsters, Sooterkin's roommates Will and Jill, but as they are a Shade and a Slime, they are usually portrayed by mime-acting to nothing and a pool of colored water or pile of gelatin, respectively.

Sooterkin's puppeteer is a human named Piotr, with close-cropped blonde hair and a habit of wearing monster fashion accessories. The camera operators and other staff are also human, but if someone wants to come and work for the show, Rich will never turn down a helping hand.

1x01: New Neighbor, New Everything
Rich moves into his apartment and has A Lot Of Questions. Sooterkin also has A Lot Of Questions, because he's been in Ryslig since he was very little and doesn't remember much of home. They find common ground over their love of stories.

1x02: Following Followers Sooterkin introduces Rich to his neighbors Irene and Mike, who have very different ideas of what they want to do with their monstrous lives. Irene follows the Fog, and Mike follows Elias. They both explain that not all people who follow the gods want to fight.

1x03: A Week For The Weak After the harrowing events of the month, Rich returns to his apartment to find Sooterkin grappling with his weaknesses, and learns that even monsters can be scared of something. They talk about the moon disappearing, and Rich tells Sooty the Brothers Grimm's story about the moon.

The rest of the first season consists of episodes where volunteers from the network come on as visitors to Rich's apartment and talk to him about what sort of changes they've gone through, and how they're still human in some very real ways.
